What are Allergies?
When we normally think of allergies, we may think of a runny nose or a sensitivity to food. That being said, allergies often tend to irritate the skin and cause a great deal of discomfort for our patients. Whether your body is reacting to an ingredient in your laundry detergent or the lunch you just had, allergies can be extremely uncomfortable when left untreated. Most allergies appear on the skin in the form of red, itchy skin that can be painful and irritating. If you are experiencing allergies on a regular basis, we encourage you to come in for a private consultation with Dr. Sarah Dolder.
What do Skin Allergies Look Like?
Allergies can look very different for everybody depending on how their body reacts to an irritant. The most common ways that allergies manifest themselves are through:
- Hives. These small bumps or welts have the potential to appear throughout the entire body after an allergy exposure. While most hives typically fade after a few weeks on their own, chronic hives may persist for more than six weeks at a time.
- Eczema. This commonly known skin condition is actually a skin allergy that affects up to 20 percent of children and three percent of adults. Eczema is often characterized by dry, red, scaly patches of skin.
- Contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is what many of us may think of when we think of a skin allergy. This allergy presents itself in the form of a rash, blisters, or skin irritation.
What Causes a Skin Allergy?
Unfortunately, there isn’t one direct source that causes everyone’s allergies. Instead, allergies are specific to each individual. Common allergies our patients experience are sensitivities to specific foods, jewelry, soaps, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, and scents. We may ask you a series of questions about recent habit changes or exposure to new products in order to find the source of your allergy during your appointment with us.
