What are Infections?

Skin infections are a normal and common occurrence, as the skin is the body’s largest organ. Infections can be caused by a variety of different factors and can range from mild irritation to a severe condition that requires intensive treatment. We encourage all of our patients who may be experiencing a skin infection to come in and get it treated as early as possible to prevent widespread damage to the skin. There are four different types of skin infections that we commonly see at our practice, including:

  • Bacterial skin infections
  • Fungal skin infections
  • Viral skin infections
  • Parasitic skin infections

What do Infections Look Like?

Infections all manifest in very different ways depending on what is causing the infection to occur. Most bacterial infections are characterized by the appearance of small, red bumps along the skin, whereas viral infections can appear in the form of warts or molluscum contagiosum. If you feel that you may have an infection, we encourage you to come in for a private consultation. This is to prevent any widespread damage to the skin.

What Causes Infections?

Because there are so many different types of infections, there are many different factors that may contribute to your specific infection. Our providers may do some testing and ask you questions about any recent events or habit changes that may contribute to the onset of your infection. Most infections are caused by exposure to a virus, bacteria, parasite, or fungus and can be highly contagious.
