Hyperhydrosis

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can be a debilitating condition that interferes with daily living for people of any age. From sweaty palms to clothes that are soaked through at the underarms, those suffering from hyperhidrosis can find tremendous relief with the right treatment. At Greenwich Point Dermatology in Greenwich, CT, Dr. Dolder and our team of Board Certified experts, can diagnose hyperhidrosis and help you discover relief from excessive sweating with the latest clinical advancements.

What causes hyperhidrosis?

Under normal conditions, the body starts to sweat in response to heat in order to cool itself, or sometimes due to nervousness. Hyperhidrosis occurs when the body begins to sweat uncontrollably when the body temperature is normal or at even the slightest stress stimuli.

The exact cause of localized hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating at the same locations such as the palms, feet, armpits, or groin, is not known, although anxiety can be a trigger. Generalized hyperhidrosis, which affects sweat glands of the whole body, may be caused by hormonal changes, such as menopause, thyroid issues, illness or infection, or medications.

What are the signs and symptoms of hyperhidrosis?

In hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands of the skin are overstimulated and cannot be regulated, leading to excessive sweating. For localized hyperhidrosis, specific areas of the body may be affected, such as both palms, both feet, both armpits, or the groin.

To differentiate this from a normal amount of sweat, hyperhidrosis sufferers experience a negative impact on their daily life, either having to change their clothes multiple times a day, being unable to hold a pen due to sweaty hands, or developing frequent skin infections due to excessive sweat.

What are my treatment options for hyperhidrosis?

Excessive sweating can be embarrassing and psychologically distressing. Treatment options help patients find relief and regain a normal life. After a physical exam and any diagnostic testing, your doctor will recommend treatment options to help manage your sweating based on the location and severity of the sweating.

Treatment options include:

  • clinical-strengthantiperspirants
  • Botoxinjections
  • prescriptionmedication
  • lasertreatments
